My Husband has been wearing these for years and loves them. They are a classic fit, and the legs are not huge like alot of the other shorts out there. This year we couldn't find them anywhere , went online and sure enough Altrec had them. Thanks Altrec!!

This is a very great pair of shorts, I really like it. It is basically the same as columbia's ROC pants in shorts, with the same very cool zipped compartment inside the right pocket. The fabric is very soft and comfy. The only thing I would criticize is that the button has a tendency to pop easily after a while, so you kind of need a belt to prevent this. I would also recommend you check the color in a store or somewhere before ordering because it is hard to get a good idea from the picture. For example, sage has a greeny taint I do not see on my computer screen. Flax and fossil are pretty accurate but I guess it depends on your computer.

I own a construction company in California, these shorts are all i wear. Fit good, look good, and comfortable. I own 10 pair. Havent tried the roc version usually get valley view, but cant seem to find them anymore.

Very stylish and excellent fitting shorts. Pockets are deep and functional. My second pair. Will definitely buy more. Altrec had a great selection and they shipped the shorts to me in just a few days.

I teach weightlifting and PE and these are the first shorts that can hold up to the wear and tear I put on them. They don't show the dirt or the grease from the plates and it is hard to put a hole in the fabric.

Without a doubt these are the best shorts I have ever had. This style is much better than Columbia's Ultimate ROC shorts for a few reasons. First the security pocket is on the right hip just behind the normal right hand pocket. This pocket is secured by a zipper that zips down. These features makes anything your carrying in this pocket super secure. (Plus sitting on you wallet is bad for your back, and your wallet is not readily accessible for theft.) Also on the right hand side, on the thigh is a utility pocket, large enough for most cellphones and secured by a strip of velcro. There is also a small attached pocket that will fit a pen. The granite cloth is very durable for everyday use, and felt more comfortable as I continued to use it. The 4 colors can be matched to many other colors, though I wish they had come out in darker colors like slate, forrest green or even a dark moraccan red clay color to provide a larger variety. I originally bought these shorts in 2005 and it wasn't until 2010 that I had to look for new ones, and then only because the cloth in the seat around the pocket had finally worn out from use. Columbia has discontinued this style, and the Ultimate ROC shorts are poor replacements, plus they trip you when you put them on. I found Altrec because I asked Columbia where I could find more ROC shorts and they actually directed me to Altrec because they still have the shorts in stock. I have purchased a few and plan to get a few more while I still can. I honestly cannot say enough about these shorts, and all I say about the ROC shorts applies to the ROC pants by Columbia (still in production thank goodness!). If I had a complaint about these shorts it would be that now I hate to go shopping for shorts because none of the shorts I find at retail locations compare to these. (This is my opinion, I work for a city's sanitation department, not Columbia, yours could differ, but I would not expect or hope it would, thank you for your time hope this was helpful.) Oh and never had an issue with the buttons or zippers, and the fit was just right, not to small or large.

These columbia ROC shorts are the best! My husband has tried every short out there (I should know...I am his personal shopper) and these are his favorite. They are sturdy, durable and have the right amount of pockets. He especially loves the hidden zipper pocket so he doesn't lose his cell phone! They last for years and still look new. Can't say enough good things about these shorts!

I bought these shorts for my husband after he was very pleased with a pair of Roc pants that he has had for 2 years. He is very picky about the length of shorts and since these are available in 8" length, I knew he would like them. The 36 inch waist was a true fit. These shorts are durable for rugged trail hikes or setting up a site, yet look good for casual wear out to town. He finds the zippered pocket very helpful and likes the sleek look. (He is not a fan of cargo pants/shorts). I ordered another pair because they are his favorite now and Altrec has them at a very good price. I have always been happy dealing with Altrec; their service is excellent.

No other shorts have a separate front zipper pocket and an open outer slash pocket to protect your wallet; and a side patch pocket to hold your phone (though I had to remove some stitches to fit my iPhone). Great fit, launder and iron well and look good for days. Wish they were still manufactured!

I can't stand most of the shorts made today. Too long, too baggy, too thin, or too wrinkly. These are just right and the quality is stellar. Columbia hit a home run with these shorts. They look rugged but are stylish, and they are incredibly comfortable.

I have worn these shorts for several years now, and cannot get enough of them. They are great for almost any activity: camping, hiking, or just casual wear around town. High quality, comfortable shorts - and with the 8" inseam, I don't look like I'm trying to be 12 years old! The double pockets (one zippered) on one side are very handy. The rear pockets are actually wide and deep enough to hold a wallet and have secure velcro closure without bothersome flaps. The front snap closure is also much better than the traditional button - which inevitably falls off. The only pocket I don't have a use for is the rear cell phone pocket - it's not too good when you sit down. All in all, these are excellent shorts for active use, and I am very pleased with the purchase.

Bought these for my boyfriend because he wears the pairs he has so much that they are getting really raggedy looking. They don't seem to sell these exact shorts anywhere anymore..especially in stores...He loves the 8inch inseam so I was so excited to find these! I ordered him 4 pairs!

Columbia makes outstanding products for the outdoors and these shorts are no exception! Knee Length, Good Fit, Quality Materials & Construction - these shorts are built to take some punishment on the trail but look good with a tucked in shirt at the ball game or bar. I've purchased four pair of the Columbia ROC shorts over the past few months from Altrec and I'm more than pleased with the quality, cut, and rugged design of these shorts. I opted for the longer cut, I think 9" inseams. I've been a Patagonia shorts guy in years past, but I kept reading great reviews about the ROC shorts. Now I understand what all the good buzz is about. I train athletes in the warm Louisiana climate and ROC shorts have some cool design features I find useful, including the right-side double pocket - one zippered, one regular. I also love the design of the right rear pocket...there's a small utensil pocket adjacent to the main rear right pocket which is perfect for pens, pencils, etc. Feel safer keeping sharp objects on the posterior side, if ya know what I mean.... The 100% heavy cotton fabric seems durable and the snap button and zippers are all of decent quality. Good utilitarian shorts at an outstanding price point. Highly recommend. Can't go wrong ordering from Altrec!

Yeah, I really wrote that title. I’m >40 years old and been wearing shorts all my life—even to work. I bought my first pair of ROC Short in 2005. I liked them so much I bought several more pairs. I still have them all. The colors may be well faded but the hems are still in, the pockets hold tight, and the zippers & snaps still zipper & snap. These first shorts are demoted to Saturdays so I just bought several more pairs for weekdays. What I like is the sturdy build, correct sizing, inside zipped pocket—perfect for my passport and a bankcard or two. What I love is the 8" inseam. So many of today’s short have 10, 12, or 16" inseam designed for kids. I’m over 40. I may wear short pants but I don’t want to look like a fad-happy kid. Columbia: many of your customers are adults. Adults buy clothes for decades after the kids’ fads have passed on. Keep the 8" inseam.

I needed a pair of trekking shorts and these were being offered. The price was reduced significantly from the normal low price and so I purchased them. They fit as advertised and are very durable. I can see myself using these as my primary trekking short for the upcoming season and beyond. Great value and will constructed.

My husband has been buying/wearing these shorts for the past 10 years. Thank God they don't change the styling every few years the way so many other companies do. The quality is excellent....really made to last. I would say they have a more streamlined fit.....perfect for those who run on the trim side. Also...my husband is 5'6"....and these don't make him look like he's swimming in his pants. The option of shorter or longer length is also a major plus for those of shorter stature.

I bought 3 pairs of these shorts in 2001...wore them for 9 years and they are still great, but not "new" looking anymore as they have lots of "character" (paint stains, etc). Finally got around to buying the exact same 3 pairs in 2010 to last me another 10 years from altrec. These shorts are the best.

As a sailor, I have worn these for the past 8 years. The Zipper pocket is great for phones and valuables and the pen pocket does what it should; hold pens well. These shorts have been discontinued by Columbia, but well great and have a timeless style. I have worn out 12 pairs and hope to wear out another dozen.

The Columbia shorts are great, especially at such a good price, but the shipping makes me never want to order from altrec again. It was $9 for a single pair of shorts and they didn't arrive for over 2 weeks. That seems ridiculous to me.

First, the security pocket is JUST the best. I wish I could get all my shorts and pants with this feature! Second, I use a fountain pen every day, all day and the outside pen pocket is another great feature. I hope these features continue on other models, including the shorter inseam.

These shorts are pretty good. They seem a little stiff but hopefully they break in over time. Mine had a small gap where the stitching was coming apart. Not a huge deal though. The fit is a little tighter than normal on a 34" waist.
